The Golden Road and Beyond A Grateful Dead Primer edition by Grateful Dead Rhino Arts Photography eBooks
I've been a Deadhead for about four decades now. It was a cassette of American Beauty that turned me on to Jerry and the gang. I know that they're not everybody's cup of tea, and that's alright, but I do want to put my own life as a counter-example to those folks who contend you've got to be chemically altered somehow to enjoy the music of the Dead. I'm about as sober as they come (no moral judging, it's just my nature) and I totally dig their country, bluesy, poetic jams. I think, ironically, it's because the Dead are ultimately just so damn life affirming.Last week on Amazon I stumbled onto this fine Kindle book called The Grateful Dead and Beyond: A Grateful Dead Primer. I didn't need priming, but the book was free and it turns out it's a good little history of the Dead together with a nice discography. Written by Dennis McNally, the Dead's longtime publicist, there are some good stories about the circumstances behind the band, their songs and the legendary tours. I learned stuff I didn't know, learned more about things I'd heard about and generally enjoyed every page.
If you aren't a Deadhead, don't start with this book. Start with their music and you can start pretty much anywhere.

The Golden Road and Beyond A Grateful Dead Primer edition by Grateful Dead Rhino Arts Photography eBooks Reviews
Not many interviews with the band, but lots of information from sources close to the band. And full of facts about what was going on behind the scenes.
Great read and history of all Dead records. Inciteful and to the point, no fluff. Even if your not a deadhead it's a great read.
This is a quick tour through the highlights of the Dead's career. If you've followed them for any length of time or read almost any other book you already know everything this book has to say. The greatest value is the discography at the end, a VERY complete listing of all of the bands records, complete with the songs, personnel, etc.
It's worth the price just for that.
The Golden Road and Beyond is a concise but useful way to put a modicum of order in what, by its nature, is a thankfully disorderly phenomenon - the history of one of the most important bands on rock and roll. I read the book on one brief sitting before a local broadcast of a 1974 live concert of the Dead - and it amplified the pleasure of the music. Highly recommended for both veteran and neophyte Deadhead!
I'm new to the Grateful Dead. I missed out because of the drug associations, just wasn't into that.
But the music really interests me now. It really surprises me how well written and preformed it is.
That's why I like this book so much. It really helps me pick the album's I want now and which later. Can't afford all of them at one time.
This is a quick reading nice little primer of the entire Grateful Dead canon released before the From the Vault releases began. The writing is informative without being stiff and gives an overview of the run up to each albums release in the Dead discography. If you want more detail read "Garcia" or "Searching for the Sound", they are worthwhile reads too and both flesh out the details of what is here.
As far as I can tell, this is a compilation of the introductions to the GD studio album boxed sets. There were a few cool nuggets that I didn't know, but mostly it's a rehash of their recording years. There's very brief mention of their live shows, and nothing really about the different live recording series. This is a quick read for experienced Deadheads, and a good introduction for people who are just starting to get into the Dead.
